Viking Day
July 5 - Sunny and 50 degrees - Qassiarsuk
Today we visited Qassiarsuk, a settlement in southern Greenland. It was the original homestead of Erik the Red and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A church and longhouse have been reconstructed to represent Norse life1000 years ago. Incredible structures. The original church was believed to have been built by Erik’s wife, Thjodhild, as the first Christian church in Greenland. Their son, Leif the Lucky (Leif Erikson) launched his exploration of North America from this settlement, traveling to Baffinland, Labrador and Newfoundland. The current village was founded as a sheep farm in 1924. There are several farms, a church, school, cafe, grocery store, hostel, AirBnB, ATM, and a population of about 40 people. We enjoyed meeting some of the welcoming residents and sampling local baked treats.
