Saying Goodbye

July 12 - bright sunshine and highs in the 60s - Kangerlussuaq Airport Greenland

We awoke to a beautiful sunny day on the fjord that leads to Kangerlussuaq airport.  The airport was build by the USA in 1941 to help move planes to Europe. It is 90 miles up a long beautiful fjord to help it get away from the coastal winds and fog and also to find a flat piece of ground.

We got our passports back and had breakfast.  Everything had to go back into the suitcase somehow so we got that done. We were checked into the flight on the ship so that was great.  Then we just had to wait for our last zodiac ride to shore.

We boarded a big bus for the ride to lunch. It was at the rowing club on a beautiful lake.  Another great meal and then we headed for the airport.  We had the worst security checkpoint in history and it took 2 hours to clear 114 people. Their rules were draconian and everything had to be done perfectly. We made it thru after the plane was supposed to leave but they held the plane.

Flight was smooth with good food as we headed for Iceland. Landing was smooth and we got thru the airport and into a taxi to the hotel. We had some wine in the lobby and then off to bed.

It was hard to say goodbye to the expedition team members on the ship. They had done an outstanding job for us and we had learned a great many things because the people are from so many different places and cultures.  This was a very wonderful trip for all of us and we had a hard time picking our top 3 best adventures.  That is a good indicator of a great trip.
