ICE!

July 11 - foggy and cloudy with temps in the 40s - Davis Strait

We had plans to visit a small Intuit village named Itilleg but the ice had other plans.  By 4:30 AM this morning the ship was battling strong sea ice and we actually had to reverse course to try and find another path.  We were moving slowly and carefully but making slow headway.

By the morning it was clear that we could not make the village so we ended up cruising slowly past and onward to the fjord that would take us to the airport the next day.  So we cruised thru thin and thick ice all day with alot of fog as well.  We visited the bridge and the radar showed the ice in stark relief.

We had several talks during the day and finished with a captains champagne toast.  We followed that with a charity auction where we bid and won the flag that flew on the mast throughout the voyage. We had some of the expedition crew sign it and we will share it between St Louis, Breckenridge and Granite Bay.

We finished with a wonderful slide show covering all the expeditions and events on the ship.  We had a wonderful experience and we will be sad tomorrow when we finally leave the ship and fly back the Reykjavik.
