Another Day At Sea
July 8 - cloudy with some wind about 38 degrees - Davis Strait
We had a day at sea after we left Nuuk yesterday and headed up to Disko Bay. We will arrive at Disko tomorrow. The sea was relatively calm and we had a series of lectures on different topics that finished with us singing ‘Shantie Songs’ up in the Panamora lounge.
We had talks on whales and ice this morning and photography and adapting to cold this afternoon. We tasted a variety of Arctic beers along with appetizers of reindeer and musk ox meat.
The highlight of the day was cruising thru a large field ‘sea ice’ which is unusual for this area. This ice is build from the sea water freezing over time so the individual bergs are flat. When the wind blows they will crash together and if there is enough of them they can build large masses that are pretty solid. There is usually seals and other hunters on the edges looking for prey but we didn’t see much of that. The ship steered thru some of the ice to help us get some good photos.
It was a fun day at sea and tomorrow we will be busy on the zodiacs.
