A Magical Day At The Eqip Sermia Glacier
July 9 - partly sunny with high clouds at low 50s - Eqip Sermia glacier
We had a very special day. We pulled up to the second largest glacier in Iceland and then headed out on zodiacs for a shore hike. The goal was the walk completely around a small lake to get closer to the glacier but that didn’t work out. The stream was just too powerful so we could not cross it safely so we turned around and explored the tundra close to the shore. The glacier was close and we could hear the cracks and moans as it marched toward the sea.
We went back to the ship for lunch then headed out on zodiacs to tour the icebergs near the ship and then head for the glacier to get a better look. The tour thru the ice was ‘magical’ as each berg had its own personality and color and shape. We got close to the glacier which has a front face of 600 feet and is more than two miles wide. We circled in front slowly waiting and soon we saw the first of many calving events: you see them first the. The ice crashes into the water and finally you hear the sound as if finally gets to you: we saw many calving events and each one was special.
We finally had to return to the ship and we picked up some pieces of ice to put into our drinks at the bar later in the evening.
It was a magical day.
